Domaine La Toupie

LA TOUPIE, un état d'esprit, une façon de faire, une raison d'être...

R oussillon Wines located on the foothills of the castle of Queribus on the black schists terraces of Maury AOP. Domaine la Toupie was born in 2012 in the south of France, 25 km from Perpignan and the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, in the heart of the Catalan country.
Its vineyard produces Côtes du Roussillon Villages and Maury appellation wines.

N estled at the foot of the peak of Canigou, on the foothills of the Pyrenees, the estate La Toupie extends its 12 ha on the lands of the Fenouillèdes, all around the village of Maury. It is on this terroir of schists and rolled pebbles that Jérôme Collas, agricultural engineer and oenologist, chose to become a winemaker, to pursue his passion for wine...

An extraordinary range of micro terroirs is found in the vineyard... The domain's 12 ha of vines are located on limestone, rolled pebble soils, schist and schist marl soils of the famous Maury AOP. The majority of the vines are over 50 years old, and other younger vines are here to prepare the future of the estate.
The vineyard employs relatively small yields given the great age of most of the vines, the shallow soils of the hillsides, the summer drought, hours of manual labor, and regular disbudding.
Traditional grape varieties are planted such as Grenache, Carignan and Macabeu but also others such as Syrah and Mourvèdre. The hillsides facing north bring freshness and elegance. Others will contribute to density and power. Limited interventions for sustainability, the Tramontane, dry north wind greatly reduces the disease pressure.

T he Toupie is the French word for "Spinning Top or Gyroscope". It is a beautiful object in metal, passed down from father to son and found one day at the bottom of the attic...
This spinning top is an image of the cycle of the seasons: Each year at the start of the campaign, the winemaker starts again with a blank sheet of paper and, over the stages, patiently, the story of a new vintage is written, and each year will give new wine.
Like for a spinning top, the balance is unstable, and at any moment, the beautiful story can suddenly come to an end: The frost which burns the barely emerged buds, the Tramontane breezes may break the young twigs, and the hail may extinguish all hope. The spinning top or the quest for the "right" balance: What could be more elementary than a top? We throw it, it turns, it falls, and there is always renewed pleasure... Like wine, at its peak, when the right balance is reached, it provokes emotion, sensation, the desire to come back to it...
